Writing Data Management Plans

This session will provide a background on the topic of research data management and related issues such as open research and data protection. The first half of the session will explain all the necessary background knowledge on the topic. The second is a practical and interactive workshop where we will walk you through writing your own data management plan to support a research funding application. Whether you have an upcoming grant submission deadline or just want to get some practice at writing a data management plan this course is for you.

Part 1 (1hr): Introduction to research data management:

  • Which research outputs are covered by research data management,
  • The research data lifecycle,
  • Funding agencies and publishers expectations for data management and sharing,
  • Barriers to managing research data,
  • Best practice guidelines for managing data, including data protection and security,

Break time (15mins)

Part 2 (1.5 hr): Writing a data management plan

  • Collecting data and study materials,
  • Storage, security, backup,
  • Archiving, preservation and curation,
  • Discovery, access and sharing,
  • Metadata,
  • Rights and responsibilities,

Question time (15mins)

Learning Outcomes By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Understand research data management - within the wider Open Research agenda – and understand concepts such as the research data lifecycle and FAIR data
  2. Understand funders’ requirements when writing data management plans
  3. Understand best practices for managing data across different phases of the research data lifecycle
  4. Write a data management plan in-line with UCL expectations and best practice guidelines

Aimed at all researchers at all levels including PhD and MRes students who wish to further their knowledge of research data management with a view to writing a data management plan in-line with best practice, UCL and funders’ expectations.
